Facts: Argyll Cinemas

The Empire Cinema, Lochgilphead
Now a guest house, the Empire Cinema was originally constructed for the Empire Exhibition in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow in 1938. When the exhibition closed the cinema was dismantled and rebuilt in Lochgilphead.

It opened there in 1939 and continued to operate as a cinema until 1990.

La Scala in Dunoon
Opened in 1936 by Green's, the La Scala cinema in Argyle street, Dunoon had seating for 930. It showed films for nearly 40 years before closing in the 1970's.

It was subsequently converted into a shop.

First mention of a cinema for Campbeltown
The following appeared in the Argyllshire Herald on Saturday June 22nd, 1912 and is the first mention of the Picture House in Campbeltown.

'We understand that a local syndicate has been formed to erect and carry on a picture palace in Campbeltown, the site of which is in Hall Street, near Royal Avenue Mansions. It is stated that the managing director to be appointed is in close touch with the most up-to-date picture houses in Glasgow. The plans are now being prepared, and we understand that accommodation will be arranged for about 700 persons, and the theatre will be modern in every respect.'

The Rex Cinema, Campbeltown
In 1939, Green's of Glasgow opened a new cinema in Campbeltown just yards from the existing Picture House. The Grand Opening was performed by Provost Greenlees.

The Rex had a capacity of over 1200, with 828 in the stalls and 391 on the balcony. The seating was pretty standard apart from the famous 'Golden Divans' on the first three or four rows of the balcony. They cost extra, but were very comfortable. There was also a tearoom on the balcony foyer but that had gone by the mid 1950's.

The Rex was closed in 1977 and finally demolished in May 1981.

The Highland Theatre, Oban
Originally starting life as the Phoenix, the Highland Theatre on George Street has 2 screens seating 251 and 52.

The Highland Theatre is one of the few cinemas still surviving and showing films in Argyll.

Studio 'A' in Dunoon
With the closure of La Scala, the independently owned and run Studio 'A' in Dunoon opened in 1976 in a purpose built shed.

With 2 screens seating 188 and 70, Studio 'A' is still going strong and is still showing films to this day.

Ardrishaig Cinema
The Public Hall in Ardrishaig was used as a cinema for many years.

Winter Garden, Rothesay
Originally built in 1924 to enclose an open-air amphitheatre, the Winter Garden was used as a variety theatre.

Now a Grade A listed building, it was closed in 1971 but eventually restored in the 1990's as a multi-purpose building. It contains a small cinema with 97 seats, a restaurant and the local Tourist Information office.

The Playhouse, Oban
Now demolished and replaced by a row of shops with flats above, the Art Deco Playhouse was situated on Argyll Square across the street from the Royal Hotel.
